Repair Corrupt Offline Files Cache & Database

Share the knowledge

Sometimes when syncing Offline Files in XP, things go haywire. No surprises. Stuff just starts to disappear and network drives contain only a partial listing of files, if any at all. You may experience other oddities, too. Yet another Microsoftism. Is that a word? It should be.

To recreate the cache and rebuild the database, add this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache
Key Name: FormatDatabase
Key Type: DWORD
Key Value: 1

Reboot. The key will remove itself automatically after performing the operations.

Or from My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > Offline Files tab, hold down CTRL+SHIFT and click the Delete Files button. Yes, then reboot.

I’d like to thank Microsoft for this feature.

Have you ever had a re-initialization not work? I had one that on repeated attempts – and subsequent reboots – it would sync again on login – but then once offline – no folders or files in the directory.

I’m at a loss and want to reload instead of researching further – but not sure if something else is the problem that will follow me past the reload. I have already searched through files and folders for any really long ones – and they are all under 30 characters.

    Any help is appreciated

Yes, I’ve seen this fail to work on some rare occasions. Have you tried disabling offline files completely? Do all of the files seem to be there? And now if you re-enable, sync, then go offline, are they available or gone? Has the sync ever reported errors in the event log? Is the problem widespread or isolated with one machine?

At any rate, please don’t spend too much time on this. If your important/critical data backups are current, you may be able to reload in less time.

I am unable to create the new key even after going through the permissions routine. I ran Regalizer and the “bug report” gave “Registry Exception” as the reason. How can I overcome this please?
